The National Council for Behavioral Health held NatCon 2017 in Seattle, Washington. The theme was “The Intersection of Innovation and Action.” FADAA was represented at NatCon 2017 and attended many of the workshops, though-leader sessions, and general sessions. The Council’s VP of Addiction Services interviewed acclaimed musician Judy Collins during a thought leader session on suicide, survival, and strength. Judy Collins discussed conquering her own addiction and losing her only son to suicide and addiction. She still sings, but she also lends her voice to breaking down the barriers of openly discussing addiction and the after-effects of suicide.

One of the general sessions featured Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. His office released the first-ever report on alcohol, drugs, and health. The landmark report found that alcohol and drug misuse is one of America’s most pressing health concerns. Nearly 21 million Americans suffer from substance use disorders.
